rowlander, you can get compressor to work with more than 1/9th of a core?
That sarcasm is directed at compressor and not at you.

I WISH i could get compressor to work. Oh, sorry....I should clarify, to work beyond 1 frickin' file! If i start a batch, the only thing I'm not sure of is which error I'll get - it's usually 1 of 2.

Yet, I can use Innobits, Bitvice to compress MPEG2 files for DVD (and the ac3s) and well, wouldn't you know, this fine 3rd party apps makes all my cores jump with excitement without me even praying to get on my knees and cry for help :)

I'm a pretty laid back guy, but man compressor just busts my kahonies. Heck, I even emailed Mr. Jobs about it (although nothing back).

And don't even get me started on having to export to QT first. I do not even come close to understanding the logic behind that considering it's their own software!

BUT, compressor is stopping me from upgrading to an 8core so no more money for Apple in that case. No sense spending a few grand on a machine whose potential won't even come close to being tapped.

I don't drink, but feel like I should have one right now.

    ugh :)

Have you configured QMaster? It's a bit of a PITA, but worth it once it starts working.

That's a crock - you and most who have any sort of idea about what's going on know it.

They would not be spending so much time doing everything they can to stop the possibility of jailbreak if they didn't care "Jasus" is jailbreaking.

Despite what anyone wants to argue, jailbreaking means piracy to those who care at Apple - plain and simple.

    Oh you're so smart...thank you.

"When the app store learns to accept international credit card I will surely stop jail breaking"

I saw a commercial for RIM's playbook the other day. It has some uniqueness to the interface. Sure all tablets are going to be similar to an extent but at least RIM tried to put a little originality into theirs unlike Samsung and their blatant copy of the ipad.

You're right this isn't the portable media market - those devices are primitive compared to what's being offered here and yet the heavy weights were NEVER able to even dent THAT market. You would think the likes of SONY, HP MOTOROLA, M$SOFT and all the other consumer electronics giants, with all of their resources, could come up with something smart enough to compete with the iPod over the years, right?
We pretty much knew Sony would fail, they're the ultimate balldroppers. They refused mp3 for as long as humanly possible, instead trying to peddle advanced MiniDisc players with USB2, years into the iPod era. Sort of a repeat of the Betamax vs VHS war back in the 80s. When they eventually caved, they introduced some butt ugly, purple, blobby mp3 players nobody wanted. Now with PS3 they're even losing a market they completely dominated, they're getting pummeled by Xbox 360 and the technologically inferior Nintendo Wii. I bet they'll somehow manage to drop the ball with Blu-Ray, too. I never understood Sony, never will.

M$ entered the game way too late with Zune, and with this DRM quirk the Zune is doomed. It's not even out in Europe yet. With iPod, Apple has always made sure that anyone in the world can have it in their hand a few days after the Keynote. The only thing the competition can hope for is that the iPod one day grows stale in the public eye. When everyone has one, nodoby's special.

The iPod was revolutionary in its design and usability (and not the first portable media device by the way). Paired with the best online music store experience distanced it even further from the rest. That's what revolutionary means: a new playing field - a new system - a new product. Apple does this better than anyone in the world. I'm not sure the competition is just Nokia, SonyEricsson, and Motorola any more. Listen closely, Apple is attempting to reinvent the mobile phone by marrying what we traditionally associate with a smartphone (smartERphone actually) under a totally new "human friendly" and intuitive package. Those things tend to have mass appeal.

Yeah, but as you say they rolled out a complete solution with the iPod+iTunes+iTunes Store package. This may well be what separates iPod from Newton, NeXT and the Cube. With iPhone there are many loose ends. Apart from the Cingular exclusive being a dealbreaker for many, plus the fact that unlike the iPod it will only be available in the US for quite some time (here in Europe it's been a long, long time since we last saw a business class phone that doesn't support 3G), how is it going to attract corporate customers? Allegedly it won't even accept 3rd party software, yet businessmen will want to sync it up with MS Exchange/Outlook or Lotus Notes, and they'll probably want to snap in their TomTom or Wayfinder GPS module too. As of now, the gateway for all things iPhone is iTunes, and they're kidding themselves if they think corporate customers will trust a damn music jukebox with their mail, calendar and contacts. And if kids can't cram it chock full of Java games they won't want it either. So the market position really isn't anything like they have with the iPod. Market share is everything. Look at the Palm - say what you will about M$ but PDAs with their mobile OS were superior to Palm in so many ways it's insane, but noooooo, people just had to stay with the Palm, just like they'll stick to their Treo even when iPhone can cook breakfast for them.

Here's an interesting article in NY Times about some of the potential pitfalls for the iPhone: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/11/technology/11cnd-apple.html

Anyway, I agree, it's a win/win situation for consumers. At worst, iPhone itself will flop, at best, it will be a hit, but either way it will motivate the competition to beef up their technology. They might wanna start with the OS and the interface - Symbian OS looks like crap. Maybe M$ will Vista-fy theirs.

Give me something AOL and Google don't.

AOL just announced something that allows you to back up 5GB of data. .Mac gives you 1 GB. AOL is free, .Mac costs $99. I understand there are other features, but AOL has most of them too. It's not worth the $$ until some major improvements happen.

    applerocks
Plus, I believe AOL offers unlimited email storage (in addition to the 5GB of backup space).

...I'm starting to forget why I ever gave Apple that $100.

I think at your age it is your parent's responsibility to provide for you. That isn't arguable. What is arguable is how they will provide moral/ethical/behavioral guidance to you--and I don't think that trying to stop you from doing something that (a) you're already doing, (b) you're going to do as soon as you can, (c) you're going to do anyway, and (d) that can be done safely. You are your own person and can make your own actions, choices, and (perhaps) mistakes. I think any parent that at your age of 18 tries to tell you where you can or cannot go, at whose house you can or cannot sleep over, or what girl you can or cannot like/love/date/****, is overparenting.

Cut the umbilical cord and start making your own choices--your parents need to cope with your adulthood.

I am thinking about buying a refurbished iPhone 4 16 GB. I have 2 questions:

    1. Has anyone experienced any problems with refurbished iPhones in the past?
    2. How long is the warranty on refurbished iPhones?

First i would like to say, The family messaging plan does qualify for the needed "messaging plan". Second i have found this to be a great money saver, we were on a 1400 min plan, and were able to drop to the 700 min plan, and still get the same features, but save $20 a month :) Also if you have A list on your 1400 + plan you don't need it because this does cover everyone :). Just thought id share my information, have fun with your new savings!

Google don't map the world either - they do the street map images, but if you look at Google Maps you'll see that the actual roads data comes from either Tele Atlas or Navteq. Those two companies sell their map sets to all the sat-nav companies too.

Exactly. Google gets map data from multiple sources. The reason Turn by Turn nav is only available on GMaps Android stems from licensing arrangement from map a provider.

Google Maps can't be used for commercial purposes or modified or used as a base to build software on top of etc. Apple isn't looking to build a better map application than Google, it's building a map platform that developers can fully tap into and not have to abide by any restrictions or limitations from Google Maps.

    Winni -

Danke sehr. Thanks for the time and effort to get back to me with a response that looks at things from a 'real world' perspective. Your points are issues which I have not even considered before.

    Everybody else -

Thank you kindly for taking the time to get back to me. All points noted and considered.

Since doing a little more research into it and taking the comments on this forum into account I have changed my opinion on whether or not macs should form part of our IT infrastructure. It would seem that the real world problems of planning for the future, ensuring user productivity and product support, not to mention the capital outlay issues are going to trump any warm fuzzy feelings that I may get from working with my mac at home. Being an engineering firm, the majority of our specialist software is, for the foreseeable future, going to be written for Windows only.

Most importantly then, the positive user experience I have at home will almost certainly not carry over to the workplace and will more than likely only generate further frustration for other non-mac users. I currently have enough trouble simply trying to ensure compatibility between Excel '07 files and Excel '03. Adding Excel for Mac files into the mix will no doubt simply introduce another layer of complexity which is certainly not beneficial. This is indicative of many of the 'small' problems that are typically faced every day in the office, again, no thank you to having any more of those.

While I wish the warm fuzzy feeling I get from using my mac at home could be translated into my working day experience, the fact of the matter at the moment is that facilitating this is just not practical or feasible and in a mixed PC / MAC environment not very likely to happen.

The fanboy in me hopes that someday this will get sorted out, but I am not going to hold my breath.

    miles01110 -

Thanks for the reality check, and I could not agree more with your take with respect to the the ways of the world and the importance of the real world concerns of IT people. IT is a department that I have never worked in, hence me posting on this forum to get some views on the topic at hand.
I spend all day writing reports, specifications, data sheets, e-mails to clients and suppliers etc. All of which require dotting every I and crossing every T from a grammar point of view. I am not going to waste my time ensuring my grammar is perfect on a forum post... seriously bru - not helpful at all.

In 5 years time, Kindle OS will have a greater market share than android I think.

Really stop lying to yourself. Android is a powerful mobile OS that can be adapted to many situations. Its not going anywhere for a while. Kindle will not outsell it as kindles direct competition the Nook (an android device). Android will save people money in the future. Why right your own set of code for a cash register when you just build it on top of android.

THink I figured it out. It seems to do with the order of how I put it to sleep/disconect cables.

If I booted it with the mouse/keyboard and external display, then disconnected the mouse, then keyboard, then external display it works just fine.

    Really weird.

Offline maps would take away income from the Cellular Providers. Also, putting a GPS in the Touch would take away from iPhone sales.

    Both won't happen...

Offline vector based maps are the norm for Nokia handsets that support Ovi Maps including all their Symbian handsets, some S40 featurephones and forthcoming Windows Phones. You can download entire countries to your phone which is great for using abroad with no data contract needed. Ovi Maps on Symbian^3 is leagues ahead of Google Maps on any platform.

IIRC part of the deal with Microsoft is to supplant Bing with Ovi Maps although that might just be on Nokia branded Windows Phones.
